Burning Up? Friendly Fever Help from your Favourite Homeopathic Remedies

Fever seems to strike more dread into parents than many other common childhood ailments. However, from the homeopathic point of view, fever isn’t something to be feared or banished; it is a symptom to be embraced and thanked for its role in helping to overcome illness and bring the body back to equilibrium. And like any other symptom, it is a useful guidepost to what remedy might be most supportive to help a little (or big) one through their illness state.

Fevers are more than just signs of illness or an inconvenient byproduct of illness. They are an integral part of the immune response, and actually trigger many of the needed immune response mechanisms to take place. So, rather than suppressing fevers with allopathic or other forms of medications, embracing them and using well-chosen homeopathic remedies to support the body through fever and other symptoms will help the body’s illness response mechanisms to do their job better, and help the sick person to move through their illness with more ease.

Homeopathic remedies work with the body’s healing response to infection or illness, not against it. So, while a homeopathic remedy that is a good match can bring comfort and a lessening of illness symptoms, and perhaps a speedier journey to wellness, it doesn’t stop or suppress the helpful processes that are taking place within the body. This is why homeopathic remedies are friendly fever help – like a good friend they listen to the details of what’s going on and then support and help and calm the symptoms.

Here are some of the best friends homeopathy has to offer for a case of fever:

Belladonna

This remedy is useful when the illness comes on suddenly. The fever itself might be on the higher side; indeed the patient might be so hot that you can feel the heat radiating from them. Other indications for Belladonna include a red face, little thirst, and dilated pupils. The person can be a bit delirious or have nightmares with the fever. If they have a headache, the pain is likely throbbing. A key little symptom to watch for that may indicate the need for Belladonna is a craving for lemons or lemonade.

Aconite

Sudden onset is a feature of this remedy also. If an illness begins soon after being out in wind or cold, or after a fright or shock, then Aconite is likely to help. The person needing Aconite for their fever might be restless and anxious, or even fearful. Night time is likely the worst time for their symptoms. With this fever, the skin is often dry and hot to the touch, and the person is thirsty. There may also be a version of ‘hot/cold’ symptoms together, such as: feeling hot inside the body and cold on the surface of the body, or feeling cold and hot in alternation, or having one cheek red and the other cheek pale, or cheeks alternating red and pale.

Bryonia

The ill person needing Bryonia will likely be quiet and not talkative and quite grumpy. This illness likely has a slow speed of onset, possibly even taking days to ripen into its full expression. The Bryonia patient will usually have a dry mouth and a dry cough and be thirsty for a lot of liquid all at once. Headache often accompanies the Bryonia fever. The biggest thing to look for to identify the need for Bryonia in a fever is that the person feels more sick and worse in general for any movement at all. So you will likely find them staying still and quiet in order to avoid this aggravation.

Ferrum Phos

Has a reputation for helping ‘generic’ illness and fever symptoms. In other words, there are few symptoms to help you choose a remedy precisely, or the illness is in such early stages that other symptoms aren’t developed yet, but fever is starting. Likely the person who will respond well to Ferrum Phos has a flushed face, and is probably somewhat sluggish and moving slowly with lowered energy. In contrast to this general state of being they may be quite talkative during the illness. If you see this contradiction playing out during a fever, it is likely Ferrum Phos is a good remedy choice.

Gelsemium

This is another remedy with a generally slow development of symptoms. With a Gelsemium fever, the person will likely experience chills, especially up and down their back. Body aches are a common feature of illnesses that respond well to Gelsemium, as is a weakened, flopped out, low energy state. The limbs may feel heavy and the eyelids will probably look heavy and droopy. The person may be drowsy and dizzy and have a dull headache. Some form of shivering and shaking in the patient is also a good indication that Gelsemium will be useful.

Phosphorous

A fevered person needing Phosphorous will likely be experiencing sweats. They will also likely be very thirsty, especially for cold drinks. The voice is often hoarse in a Phosphorous-type illness. Unusual symptoms that point to Phosphorous are the patient being hungry during the fever, or feeling unusually well with a fever – children may happily play as usual with a fever. Other indications for this remedy in an illness include being fearful, especially in the dark or twilight, and feeling much better after a sleep.

Pulsatilla

In a Pulsatilla fever, the illness symptoms are quite changeable. No sooner may you experience one symptom, when it changes and another symptom become prominent. These people generally feel better for fresh air and might want to sit outside or ask for the windows open, even in the wintertime. Notably, people needing Pulsatilla for an illness are weepy, clingy, whiny, and want lots of cuddling, sympathy, and gentle affection. This is especially indicative if it’s not their normal manner. They are usually thirstless, and any discharges, including phlegm, mucus and stool are typically a yellowish or yellow-green colour. Keeping with the changeable symptoms, they may want to be covered at times and uncovered at other times, switching back and forth between the two.

Here are a few more remedies with unique little fever symptoms. You might want to consider one of these remedies if one of these symptoms stands out in your illness:

Sulphur

A fever that is worse for thinking or exerting oneself mentally.

Chamomilla

Fever brought on because of or shortly after experiencing anger.

Ipecacuanha

Fever with chills that are worse for warmth and better for fresh air.

Rhus Tox

Fever that improves for having hot drinks or the fevered person craves hot drinks.

Finally, a helpful resource that is available online is a little digital leaflet put out by Seattle Children’s Hospital & Foundation entitled: ‘Fever: Myths Versus Facts’. It may help to navigate understanding fevers and when it is appropriate to seek further medical attention.
